The 2017 CrossFit Open is over. Now what? What was the point, and why did I spend so much time and energy worrying about it.

Well, to borrow an analogy from my pastor – we can use the CrossFit Open as an MRI. An MRI tells you what is wrong, but doesn’t really do anything about the illness or problem. To get better you need some sort of treatment plan. No matter how many MRIs you get you will not get better, and no matter how many CrossFit Opens you do you won’t get better unless you implement a plan for the year.

The CrossFit treatment plan does not need to be complicated and for goodness sake don’t try to do everything all at once, because that is just setting yourself up for overtraining and burn out.

The first place that almost everyone can start is with INTENSITY. I can’t tell you how many times after an open WOD we hear, “I have never pushed myself that hard” or “That hurt worse than anything I’ve ever done in class”. If you found yourself uttering those phrases or thinking them, then the first thing that you need to work on is upping your intensity in class every day.

Intensity is painful, but it is also where all the magic happens. Chris Speller said it best when he said, “Really, intensity is being comfortable with being uncomfortable.” “That discomfort—doing 5 more reps when all you want to do is stop—is how you become fitter.”

You need to treat each day as a training exercise and not a competition. Don’t think about how you can game plan or strategize each workout so that you can be top of the leaderboard that day, but think about which area you need to work on and how you can accomplish that goal using the daily workout. It might mean hanging on for a few more reps at the beginning, it might mean doing the heavier weight, and it might mean using the lighter weight and going unbroken.

That’s it… That is the beginning of the magic formula: Daily WOD at high intensity, eat well, rest well. Its simple, but never easy!
