I hate rest days.  There, I said it out loud.  I feel sluggish and lethargic.  My nutrition suffers.  It’s especially frustrating to be at the box coaching a WOD that I don’t get to do.  In truth I would rather workout every day. However, experience of listening to my body tells me that I need rest days.  I don’t have to like them but I do need them.  CrossFit HQ recommends 3 days on and 1 day off.  That just doesn’t work very well with a 7 day week.  My typical schedule is 3 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on and 1 day off.  The weeks that I have strayed from that and gone 4 or 5 days straight I feel it.  That 4th day is rough.  Everything feels heavy, I feel slow and my time/score usually reflects that.

You also need to take rest days!  Sure, there are a few genetic freaks that can go months without resting and still see gains, make progress and avoid injuries.  But they are the exception.  Everyone else needs to rest at least every fourth day.  Your body grows muscle and recovers from the torture of CrossFit when you rest.  Rest allows your joints, tendons and ligaments to recover and grow stronger. This is especially true for our older members.  Myself included. The biggest difference I see from my days of youth is not that I used to be faster, stronger or more fit because truth is I am in better condition now, the difference is now I need more time to recover.

Now that we are open 7 days a week with the addition of Open Gym on Sundays, we have lost a mandatory rest day for our members.  If you come on Sundays you must take another day to rest. If you just can’t stay away from the gym them come spend an hour working on mobility. We can ALL use mobility work and we can ALL improve our range of motion which will help in recovery and make you more resistant to injury. We want you to have options and get the most out of your membership with CrossFit DFW, but we also want you to be smart, listen to your body, eat well and rest well.

See you in the box,
Lance
