It was May of 2008. A friend invited me to join him and some others at Keller High School for a “CrossFit” workout. I had never heard of CrossFit. At that point almost no one around here had. To my knowledge there were zero CrossFit gyms in the area. But after that first humbling workout I was hooked. After one more workout at KHS Courtney and I headed to Colorado for our summer camp season with Compass Wilderness. I became obsessed with CrossFit.com watching videos, reading articles and doing the CrossFit.com workouts as best I could with the limited equipment we had available in Colorado. DSC05108 - CopyOnce we returned at the end of the summer Courtney and I continued to follow the main site workouts at 24 Hour Fitness. We got the craziest looks from people. We were told we were cheating with kipping pull-ups. Trainers told us what we were doing was dangerous and we were told we could not do wall balls. But since the closest CrossFit affiliate was in Ft Worth we were stuck. We also weren’t entirely sure if we were doing any of the movements correctly, but we carried on for another year before taking the plunge.

I completed my Level 1 Trainer Certification in December 2009. With no intention of coaching or opening an affiliate, I attended the course to see if I was anywhere close to being on the right track with form and technique. We quickly began assembling our garage gym. After months of hearing about the greatness of CrossFit and seeing the results in both Courtney and myself, friends and family started showing up in our garage to join us in the workouts. Danielle, Autumn, Barrett and Julie Burbach were the first four people to make their way into the tiny gym. Means a lot to us that they are all still actively involved in our community. Courtney completed her Level 1 Trainer Certification in the Spring of 2010 an by June when we headed up to Durango, Colorado for our camp season there were 7-10 people training in our garage. During our time in the mountains that summer we started discussing the possibility of becoming a CrossFit affiliate.

October 2010 it became official. CrossFit DFW was born in our garage. Monday through Friday we offered two classes a day – 5:30 am and 5:30 pm and Saturday at 9:00 am. I will never forget the shock we experienced when random people started showing up to train in our garage. Slowly but steadily our little community started to grow and we quickly added a 6:30 pm class to handle the demand. While it was hot that summer and fall, what we experienced once winter rolled around was unbelievable. DSC_0037 - CopyThe pull-up bars, kettlebells and bars were painful to hold. We tried several methods of warming them up and by far the most effective was wrapping an electric blanket around the pull-up bars and turning them on 20 minutes before class time. Classes were cancelled the week of the huge ice storm that shut down the metroplex and we emailed members “at home WOD’s”. We survived on improvisation and layers of clothing. By the end of the workout the floor would be covered in jackets, warm hats, sweatshirts and pants but NEVER gloves. No, the gloves never came off. The bars and kettlebells were just way too cold.

In March 2011 we started the search for a new place. We found the perfect fit for us in April, signed the lease and began the finish out May 1st. We owe Eric Wiegand more than we can ever repay for his help during the building project as well as the entire first summer. Autumn, the ever-willing-to-help-paint sister, and Courtney are resposible for the painting. The three stripes were my idea, the execution of painting them and the cursing my name while doing it were all theirs. With the finish out completed by the end of May, we held our first workout in our current building on Memorial Day 2011. “Murph” was our first WOD. We moved in with 15 members. By December of the same year we had grown to 50 people and once again found ourselves in need of more space. The week after Christmas we tore down the wall and finished out what is the current gym area. Later that year we took over the office space that is now our storage, office and kids area.

As the community continues to grow and expand so must the space. We are currently in the process of opening up a second room in the building across the parking lot. It is taking longer than expected to work through some issues but we are determined to get it done as soon as possible to better meet the needs of our CrossFit DFW family.

It has been a wonderful 3 years. Seems crazy to think that something Courtney and I had never heard of 6 years ago would become our passion. But I guess to be fair, our passion has always been for people and that has not changed. The relationships we have built within the gym go way beyond working out together. This is not just a job or a place of fitness to us. This is our family. We care about each and every member of the CrossFit DFW family.

Thank you for making this place incredible. We can’t thank you enough to so many of you that care about this community as much as we do. We have been so blessed by the last three years and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the CrossFit DFW Family.
